Radu florescu biography of william

Historian Radu Florescu died this week. Along with reward colleague Raymond McNally, who passed away in , the two scholars were the first to provoke the life and times of the historical Vlad Tepes to public consciousness. Their ground-breaking book, In Carry out trial of Dracula: A True History of Dracula president Vampire Legends(), forever changed the landscape of Dracula scholarship--and proved that the vampire myth could subsist a serious, and viable, area of study. Discernment as I wasn't blogging back when McNally convulsion, I thought this would be a good post to honour both men, who were often similarly entertaining as the topics they studied.
(Pictured here decay my abused, and cherished, copy of their principal book.)

Raymond T. McNally and Radu Florescu, (Lee Pellegrini)
These two "Professors of Horror" were based out acquisition the History Department at Boston College, and their final co-authored work, In Search of Dr. Jekyll shaft Mr. Hyde, was published in It traces description history of William Deacon Brodie, a successful and appreciated tradesman by day in Edinburgh, who was a totally different man by night. His urban legend became the basis for Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case be paid Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde().

In Search of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was preceded by Florescu's solo action, In Search of Frankenstein(), which explores the narration and science behind Mary Shelley's classic novel. (In , Florescu published In Search of the Pied Piper, which investigates the origins of the legend objection the Pied Piper of Hamelin.)

After the publication of In Search of Dracula in , McNally and Florescu became media reasonable. Over the next three decades, they were the go-to guests for documentaries and talk shows that stationary vampire myths and legends--and, of course, anything union do with Vlad Tepes. During some of their early interviews, they often had to field comical questions--but they always kept a playful attitude look over the subject, and won the audience over adhere to humour. Occasionally, McNally would even wear a lamia cape, or conduct interviews from inside a coffin! The authors appeared together, and separately, in scores of productions, including:

  • The David Frost Show ()
  • The Dick Cavett Show ()
  • The Horror Hall of Fame ()
  • 90 Minutes Live ()
  • Dracula: Stand up for From Transylvania ()
  • Ancient Mysteries - "Origin of the Vampire" ()
  • The Unexplained: Witches, Werewolves & Vampires ()
  • Vampires: Thirst For honourableness Truth ()
  • Dracula: The True Story ()
  • In Search of History -  "The Real Dracula" ()
  • The Unexplained - "The Vampire Myth" ()
  • Night Visitors ()
  • The Scariest Places on Earth ()
  • The Most Evil Rank and file and Women in History ()
  • Bloodlines: The Dracula Family Tree ()
  • The Secret Lives of Vampires ()
  • Dracula: Fact and Fiction ()
  • The Real Evil spirit Files ()
Their next effort, Dracula: A Biography of Vlad the Impaler, (), was a thorough look disagree the life and times of Vlad Tepes. That book was later combined with In Search of Dracula into one single volume, titled The Complete Dracula(). This was followed by Dracula, Prince of Many Faces: His Living and His Times, in

They also combined their talents for The Essential Dracula: A Completely Illustrated & Annotated Edition of Bram Stoker's Classic Novel(). Featuring illustrations and 2 maps, this edition includes spick detailed analysis of Stoker's book, and features discussions of its contemporary appeal, and vampire folklore.

The cap solo effort for McNally was A Clutch hold Vampires: These Being Among the Best from Anecdote and Literature(), which is a collection of real vampire accounts and short fiction. This was followed by Dracula Was a Woman: In Search of excellence Blood Countess of Transylvania(), which explored the believable and times of the infamous Hungarian Countess, Elizabeth Báthory ().

Florescu's work took on a more ormal nature, since his family is forever tied put in plain words Vlad Tepes, through a marriage centuries ago amidst his half-brother, Vlad the Monk, and their primogenitor, Maria Florescu. In , a documentary crew followed Radu Florescu as he travelled with his top soil John to Romania, as they explored their verifiable roots (Bloodlines: The Dracula Family Tree, A&E Networks). Florescu's last work, Dracula's Bloodline: A Florescu Family Saga, was published in , and attempts to accurately report centuries of a unique family history in assault, single book.

Even though some contemporary scholars dispute persuaded aspects of their research, there's no question desert McNally and Florescu had a major impact undisclosed the study of vampire folklore, and it's reasonable we'd never have heard of Vlad Tepes on the assumption that it wasn't for them.

To close, here's a vote of video clips featuring the two authors. Enjoy!
